OUR STORY
Bistro St Michaels originated in 1995, under husband and wife team David and Indra Stein, along with David’s parents, Phil and Sue. After a great 15 year run, the Steins moved on and the restaurant sat empty for a period of time, eventually to be purchased by new owners. Some great updates were made to the building during this time, such as the addition of a beautiful granite bar and cozy booth seating in the back. They also opened up the kitchen, providing the option of “dinner and a show” to bar patrons.
Fast forward to 2017, when Chef Stewart made the acquaintance of the then-owner of Bistro, who offered him the position of Head Chef. Just over a year later, Chef Stewart and business partner Frank Mallory purchased Bistro St Michaels in March of 2018.
General manager Jennifer Stevens, also Stewart’s fiancé, worked for the Steins in the early years of Bistro. Stevens remembered the vibrant energy of the restaurant in it’s youth, and felt as though it may have lost some of it’s ‘je ne sais quoi’ over the years. She set out to bring Bistro St Michaels back to its former glory, offering a warm, hospitable atmosphere accompanied by outstanding cuisine, the latter of course being credited to Chef Stewart and his culinary team. The couple also recently had the opportunity to put their own stamp on the restaurant, completing an interior renovation in June of 2020.
“The timelessness of the decor before the renovation was truly a nod to the Steins’ original design. It has always been a beautiful restaurant”, says Stevens. “It was just time for a refresh; time to welcome some new life by adding light and color and some unique designs into the space”. – jEN STEVENS
Patrons love the cozy feel of the back bar and booths, enhanced by dark green walls, granite surfaces and mercury glass globes. The bar area also hosts the Chef’s Counter, with seats in front of the open kitchen, providing the option of watching the culinary and service team in action. “Often a great camaraderie develops between the staff and the guests that choose to sit in this space”, says Stevens, “and guests just become enthralled by the activity!”
Other more subdued dining options include the front room, hosting the famous “see and be seen” table in the front bay window, as well as traditional bistro banquette seating overlooking the beautiful hand-painted floor. Then there is the spacious upstairs, adorned with large antique posters and crystal-laden light fixtures, which is not only used for general dining but can also be reserved for private affairs, such as corporate dinners, birthday celebrations, rehearsal dinners and day-after brunches
Bistro is open for dinner nightly every day except Wednesdays and Thursdays, with Happy Hour in the bar area only from 4:30-6:00 p.m. Reservations can be made online here.
We can’t wait to see you!
